One of the best known attractions in Gracias is Casa Galeano. Acquired in 1905 by Mr. Alberto Galeano Trejo is a well preserved colonial house with beautiful mural paintings and a small museum with colonial objects and Lenca crafts.
Mr. Alberto Galeano Trejo was a visionary man that founded the first botanical garden in Honduras. He was able to collect over 5000 species and the Galeano Botanical Garden served to educate students and as a relaxing spot for the people of the City of Gracias.
For many years Casa Galeano was abandoned and finally through the cooperation of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History along with interested neighbords from the City of Gracias it was restored to its original beauty.
There are actually two Galeano Houses. The second one is half a block away and it is equally beautiful. The second Galeano House is the private residence of promintent painter Jose Eduardo Galeano (Mito) and it is not open to the public. Below are some photos of this magnificent colonial house.
